Summary: | Women with abnormal Pap smear results faced psychological distress, which can impair their daily living. Thus, the aim of this study was to measure the level of psychosocial burden and general health as well as to determine the factors associated with psychosocial burden among women receiving abnormal Pap smear results in East Coast of Malaysia. This study was conducted using a cross-sectional study design and universal sampling approach involving 218 respondents who attended Obstetrics & Gynecology Clinic at the three tertiary hospitals at East Coast which were Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (Terengganu), Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (Pahang) and Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (Kelantan). The inclusion criteria of the respondents were women with an abnormal Pap smear results post colposcopy, Malaysian citizen women, no history of previous Psychiatric disorder and able to read in Malay. Women with known history of psychiatric illness, having complication after the colposcopy procedure (e.g. bleeding, admitted to ward, severe pain) and refuse to participate in the study were excluded. The validated bilingual Psychosocial Effect of Abnormal Pap Smear Questionnaire and General Health Questionnaire-I 2 were used in this study. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 22.0 for descriptive statistic, multi variable logistic regression and correlation analysis. This study revealed that 43.1 % women with abnormal Pap smear results demonstrated high level of psychosocial burden and 16.5% of the women were having distress. The factors which significantly associated with psychosocial burden were area of residence and general health. The correlation coefficient between psychosocial burden with general health was 0.41 indicating a fair significant association. Women who were living in the urban and semi urban area experienced higher psychosocial burden. |
