The quality of healthcare services has been found related to the nurses' job satisfaction. It is evident from the literature that job satisfaction is a factor in the retention of nurses and the prevention of high turnover. Thus, the assessment of nurses' job satisfaction and the knowledge of what factors influence their satisfaction are very important for healthcare policy makers as it can influence the healthcare services. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of job satisfaction among nurses, to identify the difference of job satisfaction in terms of nurses personal characteristic, to determine the relationship between teamwork, occupational stress, intrinsic motivations and extrinstic motivation and nurses' job satisfaction, to determine the effect of the variables on job satisfaction among nurses in Jordan public hospitals. A cross-sectional study was designed where nine hospitals were selected from 31 public hospitals in three different parts of Jordan. 371 nurses randomly participated in this study. A modified and validated questionnaire was used to measure the outcome of the variables. The study showed that 85.2 per cent of the nurses had a low level of job satisfaction. However, there is no significant difference of job satisfaction in terms of nurses' personal characteristics, a moderate relationship were found between job satisfaction and teamwork, occupational stress, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation variables. A regression analysis indicated a significant effect of variables on job satisfaction. Improving nurses' job satisfaction is very important to promote nurses' retention and prevent turnover.
