520 |a The theme of encounter between East and West (or alternatively, North and South) in African fiction emerged as a result of Africa's socio-historic and political encounter with the West at the turn of the century. This thesis attempts to analyze this theme in the following six novels from Africa and the Middle East: cUsfur min al-Sharq (Bird of the East) by Tawfiq al-Hakim (Egypt), Succession ouverte [Heirs to the Past) by Driss Chraibi (Morocco), QindiI Umm Hashim [The Saint's Lamp) by Yahya Haqqi (Egypt), al-Hayy al- Latini {The Latin Quarter) by Suhayl Idris (Lebanon), L'aventure ambigue (Ambiguous Adventure) by Cheikh Hamidou Kane (Senegal), and Mawsim al- Hijra Ha -l-Shimal (Season of Migration to the North) by al-Tayyib Salih (Sudan). Chapter I establishes the significance of this theme with its emergence in Arabic writing and examines the different factors fostering its development in Northern Africa. Chapter li focuses on the reaction to Western dominance in Africa and the Arab world in light of the portrayal of the confrontation between the cultures of the East and West in the six novels studied. Narrative perspective is the focus of Chapter III. This chapter examines the impact of Western domination on Arab and Islamic societies not only in socio-historical and political aspects of life, but also in the realm of thought. Chapters IV and V are devoted to the study of technique as a means of enriching the treatment of theme. In Chapter IV attention is given to point of view, treatment of time, plot structure, characterization, and style. The literary image and its functions in these texts is the subject of Chapter V. The analysis endeavors to illustrate how imagery can reveal and dramatize abstractions of theme and how it can function as an aesthetic articulation of meaning.
