Summary: | This thesis presents an analytical study of the manifestations of etymology -
ishtiqaq - embodied in the exegesis of al-Kashshaf ‘an haqa’iq al-tanzil wa 'Uyun alAqawil fī Wujuh al-Ta’wil by Mahmud b. ‘Umar al-Zamakhshari (d. 538 H./1075
C.E.), with the aim of answering one main question: What influence does alZamakhshari’s utilization of the meanings of the etymological manifestations have on
his interpretation of the Qur'an? The thesis demonstrates the importance of analyzing
the meanings of etymological words in understanding the Qur'anic texts, and the
contribution of this understanding in comprehending the ambiguous meanings of the
texts. This study shows the importance of knowledge of etymology in understanding
the Qur'anic texts by extracting samples of etymological manifestations embodied in
the exegesis of al-Kashshaf and explaining their meanings in the Qur’anic context,
while adhering to a descriptive, deductive, analytical methodology. The study
discusses the etymological phenomenon in the Arabic language and the effect it has
on structural semantics, as an introduction to the study of how various exegetes
utilized the etymological meanings in interpreting the Qur'anic texts. It then deduces
the principles adhered to by al-Zamakhshari in his etymological explanations, by
extracting samples of etymological manifestations utilized in his exegesis and
examining the objectives for which he employed them, the principles that guided him,
and the methodology that he adopted. The study then analyses selected etymological
manifestations from al-Kashshaf in more depth to explain the extent to which alZamakhshari was able to employ these meanings as an aid to understanding the
Qur'anic texts. It therefore concludes that al-Zamakhshari was able to grasp certain
linguistic realities, and that he used his understanding of the meanings of etymological
manifestations to demonstrate the meaning of the Qur'anic texts for the purpose of
clarifying what may be perceived as textual ambiguities, to highlight a meaning that
has been sidelined by other exegetes, to support his theological beliefs, or for a
number of other reasons. |
