520 |a This study evaluates the suitability of the four series of “Asas al-Lughah al- 'Arabiyyah” used for the beginning level at Arabic School in Brunei especially for the primary students. It looks into its linguistic, cultural, educational and pedagogical contents, contributes to improving its learning and presents suggestion to improve it. The thesis discusses general foundations of preparing a good textbook. To evaluate the intended textbook, an evaluation tool, proposed by Rushdi Ahmad Tu’aymah, was employed with modification to some of its elements to suit the needs of this research. The researcher distribute the evaluation tool to some of the teachers at Primary Arabic School in Bandar Seri Begawan. Using the teacher’s views and observations, the thesis concludes that the content of the books are suitable for beginner students (Arabic as a second language). Nevertheless, it still needs to be improved by integrating the four language skills, upgrading the vocabulary used in the syllabus, and the order of conversation topic. Typical repetition of drills should be replaced by adding various teaching activities that use modern aids and homework. Apart from that, the books should be aided with dictionary, teacher’s guide and a book of extra exercises.
