Description
Summary:This research aims to study the dimensions of creative originality associated with the inductive method and its role in developing religious sciences. This is performed by researching the status given to this method among the important academic methodologies consisting of among others, the deductive, historical, and descriptive methods. The researcher endeavours to present and discuss the fundamental orientations of each of these methods. Special focus and concentration is given to the inductive method. Its fundamental concepts are discussed, including its definition, early origins and historical developments, as well as its objectives, types, foundations, and unique characteristics. The researcher then maps the basic structure of the inductive method and its role and relationship to creative originality and invention and, as a consequence, in the scientific revolution. The researcher will also offer an explanation of the role intuition plays in the inductive method and discuss the epistemological status of the inductive method, i.e. whether its results are certain, presumptive, or merely customary mental associations? Finally the researcher intends to discuss the role of the inductive method in creative intellectual activity in the religious sciences with special reference to the disciplines of the Arabic language and Islamic legal theory and theology. The researcher explains how the developments and advancements in these sciences were for no other reason than service to the Qur'an and protection of its language, concepts and meanings. This research approaches these issues using the methods of descriptive analysis as well as induction itself. A number of conclusions were reached, among them that any race and nation in any period which adopted the inductive method and applied it with its essential constituents and observed its regulatory principles, developed and advanced. Another conclusion is that the West was not the first civilization to develop this methodology; in fact, the Babylonians, Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, and Muslims preceded them in using it, developing it and identifying its key elements and foundations. In conclusion, the researcher suggests some methodological initiatives for the use of the inductive method in the contemporary Muslim world.
