520 |a Sahih al-Bukhari and al-Kafi of al-Kulayni are considered the two most prominent books of Hadith to the Sunnis (Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah) and the Twelve Imami Shi'ites, respectively. Each group considers its book the most authentic book after the Book of Allah. This research is a comparison of the two books by the standards of ÍadÊth science in order to make clear the scholarly position of each book as well as the areas of agreement and disagreement between the two books. This was achieved by studying each book methodically, including a biographical sketch of each author followed by a description of each book, especially the methodology of compilation employed in each, and, finally, a study of their chains of narration and the texts of each. The comparison proceeded by first using a comparative methodology, followed by an analytic and critical approach. The principal source materials of each group were relied upon throughout in order to arrive at scholarly, objective conclusions. The study found that each book has attained a prominent status with the followers of the respective school of thought. The consideration given to each book can be seen in the multitude of manuscript copies made of each, the number of commentaries upon them and the number of their printed versions. The study found vast differences between the two books in their respective attitudes towards the companions of the Prophet (pbuh) and the twelve imams. Al-Bukhari relied consistently upon the narrations of the Prophet’s companions without ignoring what was narrated by those of the imams noted for their knowledge. Al-Kulayni, on the other hand, abstained from anything reported by the Prophet’s companions; the majority of the narrations in his book end with one of the imams. The study also found that al-Bukhari relied upon reliable narrators from other schools of thought, including Twelve-Imami Shi'ites. AlKulayni, on the other hand, did not use the reports of any reliable Sunni narrators, while extensively using the narrations of extremists, liars and accursed transmitters from a variety of Shi’ite sects. This resulted in the presence in his book of a great number of fabricated hadiths and narrations which contradict the religion of Islam and its principles.
