520 |a The role of newspapers and online portals is seen to be crucial in a pluralist society in Malaysia as it enables the public to participate in open discussions on issues such as language policies. The media have the capability to become the mediator if there is any conflict on decisions taken by the ruling government. The media are also known to be powerful forces that could influence the decision and policies of the ruling government. Newspapers and online portals in Malaysia are openly persuasive and there is less emphasis on objectivity. The media's influence on public opinion may impact not only the actions of the government but also power groups within a country. Media discourse from the perspective of members of the public is an important measure of success of an act or campaign. This dissertation focuses on the media discourse of Malaysians pertaining to the policy to change the medium of instruction in the teaching of Science and Mathematics from Bahasa Malaysia to English. The study specifically investigates the views of members of the public through media discourse to determine whether there is an element of coercion in accepting the new policy. This dissertation investigates three mainstream newspapers; Utusan Malaysia, The Star and The Sun and three online portals, Malaysiakini, Malaysian Insider and Malaysia Today, in order to assess the media discourse of Malaysians over a two-year period. The dissertation utilises a novel analytical framework that includes Critical Discourse Analysis by incorporating “Discourse Historical” approach to critical analysis. The public's perception of the language policy is found alongside the stance adopted towards the government and political leaders. The media's conceptualisation of events in such a way that serves the ideology of political parties is also found. Coercion is also found in most of the media discourse. The study also found that the stakeholders receive more media space compared to others. The findings of this dissertation are expected to provide significant information on the direction and success of the language policy.
