Summary:This study looks at the Arabic and French languages in respect to their verb forms. Its aim is to find out the similarities and differences that exist between the verb forms of the two languages, thus predicting the difficulties that French speaking learners of Arabic language are expected to face when they start studying the Arabic verb forms. In order to achieve this, the researcher begins with a precise description of the verb forms in the target language; which is Arabic, followed by another detailed description of the verb forms in French and lastly implements the Contrastive Analysis on the two languages using the corpus collected from the description. In this description, the verb forms are studied from the modern linguistic approach where they are treated from the following five angles: the basic characteristics of the verb forms, person, gender and number, tense, mood, and voice. The study has come up with several important results such as there is a clear difference between the number of verb forms in the two languages; there is no neutral verb form in Arabic; the root system of the verb forms is different in the two languages; they are different with respect to gender; as well as the imperative mood. In the light of the differences that are mentioned in the research, some difficulties that may occur among the French speaking learners are predicted. The study also examines the similarities between the two languages with respect to the classification of verbs to strong and weak verbs; the presence of auxiliary verb in the two languages like "كان" in Arabic which resembles the function of “être” in French; the similarities in the marking of person, gender and number; the forms of past tense and its conjugations; the forms of the present tense and its conjugations; and the mood and voice in the two languages. The study concludes with suggestions and recommendation
