This thesis seeks however, to establish whether it represents a point at which the longstanding Westphalian International era came to an end? This question is examined by viewing the actions of both non-state actors and states in the post-9/11 global political environment. By outlining the rules, laws and norms of the Westphalian International period of global political affairs and then contrasting those system-forming points against the global political reality that exists post-9/11, this study is able to conclude that the contemporary global political environment is distinctly post-Westphalian. The current era will be seen to be defined in direct opposition to the tenets of stateprimacy, sovereignty, autonomy and territoriality that form the basis of the Westphalian era. A
