Description
Summary:In this study, the researcher has endeavoured to give an objective and analytical presentation of Imam Ibn al-Qayyim’s efforts in studying Christianity, relying on his books: Hidayat al-Hayara Fi Ajwibat al-Yahud wa al-Nasara (Illuminating the Bewildered by the Propounded Dogma of the Christians and the Jews), and Ighathat al-Lahfan min Masa’id al-Shaytan (Rescuing the Anxious from Satan’s Ambushes) and other books. The researcher has focussed on Ibn al-Qayyim’s stance on Christianity and its dogma as well as the extent to which the theological, military and the sectarian conflicts among Muslims had their impact on the Christians, and how this, in turn, influenced Ibn al-Qayyim’s study of Christianity. The methodology of Imam Ibn al-Qayyim’s study of Christianity is also approached as a means of analysing the Imam’s attitude both to the four gospels of the Bible, being the main pillars of Christianity, and the distortion of these gospels, which naturally led to a lot of inconsistencies and discrepancies. Therefore, the researcher has come to the conclusion that the four gospels lack authority and authentic attribution to their authors. Accordingly, the researcher ascertains the lack of credibility of these gospels as the word of God, and hence rejects them as revelation or inspiration. As per the Christian theology and Ibn al-Qayyim’s viewpoint of it, the researcher justifies Christianity’s diversion from Unitarianism to the Trinity as he studies the internal and external factors that led to this diversion. In detail, the study dissects Imam Ibn alQayyim’s standpoint on the issues of the divinity of Jesus Christ, his crucifixion, the trinity, and the redemption of the original sin for they form the focal pillars of Christianity, both now and then. Out of reading Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, the researcher has come up with several recommendations that urge researchers in the field of comparative religions to further read and research on the Muslim scholars and their methodologies.
