總結:Although social researchers have generally acknowledged and stressed the imperative of examining various social and psychological predictors of Internet use, several predictors seem to have gone ignored. The present study has investigated the relationship between actual social integration and level of internet use among the university students. The concept of perceived social integration was introduced as an intervening variable in order to understand the nature of relationship. The study was based on the assumption that the individual’s variation of actual and perceived social integration predicts the level of Internet use. A probability sample of 337 male and female Malaysian students studying at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) was used to test three hypotheses. The results showed that the respondents used Internet for the purposes of seeking information, surveillance, entertainment, companionship and killing time. The majority of the respondents were considered as low Internet users. There was no correlation between actual social integration and amount of time spent with internet, but perceived social integration was significantly correlated with Internet use. However, no interaction between actual and perceived social integration in predicting Internet use time was found. Operational hypothesis was then confirmed to be rejected. The data, however, mildly implied that perceived social integration might be an intervening variable. Actual social integration was found to be predicting Internet use through the mediation of perceived social integration. Recommendations for future studies on the Internet use were discussed.
