Description
Summary:This is a descriptive, analytical study of the meaning of unaffixed triliteral verbs in terms of transitivity and intransitivity in some Arabic bilingual dictionaries. It aims at giving the correct understanding of transitivity and intransitivity, and categorizing the unaffixed triliteral verbs according to their types, as well as suggesting the correct and appropriate Malay translations for these verbs. The researcher has chosen three Arabic-Malay bilingual dictionaries as sources of study which are: Kamus Bahasa Arab Dewan, Kamus Kontektual al Khalil and Kamus Idris al Marbawi. This research is divided into three chapters. Chapter one discusses some ideas on lexicography. Chapter two contains theoretical aspects of transitivity and intransitivity in both Arabic and Malay languages. Chapter three focuses on the frequency of occurrences of these verbs in those sources, which are then categorized according to categories set up by the grammarians, and lists of selected verbs are then analyzed to determine the extent to which the Malay translations meet the meaning given in its original language, which is Arabic. Study showed that there are more intransitive verbs in those dictionaries, as well as it recommended that the Malay interpretations of those verbs should be revised.
