Description
Summary:The thesis is a study on ḥadith relating to the topic of bid'ah (act contrary to the accepted beliefs and practices of the Prophet PBUH). The researcher has put forward the different views on the definition of bid'ah by the Muslim scholars and at the same time presenting each related ḥadῑth on bid'ah as found in the nine collections from the book of ḥadῑth. An analytical and critical study has been carried out to make clear the different views on this issue. The researcher also tries to bring to light few examples of the different views on this topic and scrutinizes each related ḥadῑth in order to prove that the real problem actually originated from al-tabdi' (labeling certain practices as bid'ah). In the same context the researcher also tries to find out the influences of time and space and its implication on al-tabdi', whereby ignorance towards history is proven to be the source of this problem. The researcher explains that the problem of al-tabdῑʿ is caused by the attitude of reasoning which was based solely on logical thinking when canonizing on an issue, acting hastily in condemning the issue and lack of knowledge in the Shari'ah Law. Finally, the researcher lists down a few criteria and requirements needed before someone decides any practice as bid'ah. The study believes that through such criteria, the problem of bid'ah becoming a fatwa could be avoided.
