Although we find many discussions on ta'wil in the Sciences of the Qur'an, it seems that there is a small number of writing that deals with the subject in the fields of Islamic thought and philosophy, notably in English. Ta'wil seems to have been overlooked, notwithstanding its apparent contributions in the development of Islamic thought. While many works have been written about al-Ghazzali’s thought, few attempts were made to study his opinion and their application on ta'wil. Similarly, there are several writings on Ibn Taymiyyah's stance on ta'wil, but only few has attempted to compare the positions of these two great scholars on this issue. This study gives a comparative analysis of al-Ghazzali and Ibn Taymiyyah’s ideas on the concept of al-ta'wil, its significance, features and limitations. The study used the analytical method and philosophical comparison which is based on library data. The findings of the study indicate that both scholars differ in conceptualizing the ta'will and, due to their different conceptions of al-mutashabihat, also differed in their positions on its significance. Both scholars engaged themselves in the ta'wil, but in two different versions. Al-Ghazzali was influenced by Western philosophy namely that of Plato and Aristotle, while Ibn Taymiyyah depended on the methodology of the salaf. The underlying factor of the different versions they produced is the framework by which they opted to approach the Qur'an. Whereas Al-Ghazzali relied upon external auxiliary sciences, Ibn Taymiyyah depended on the internal auxiliary sciences of Islam in order to understand and interpret the Qur'an. | ||
