الملخص:The aim of this study is to discuss the concept of pledge (al-bay'ah) and its types through the studies made by Muslim scholars on this topic, and to examine the traditions of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) pertaining to this domain during His era as well as the era of His four rightly guided Caliphs Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman and 'Ali blessings be upon all of them. Such traditions have been categorised into two main categories: the first category deals with the Prophetic traditions enunciated on the great pledge; i.e the pledge of obedience to the ruler, and the second category deals with the Prophetic traditions enunciated on the minor pledge; i.e on Islamic deeds in general. This study adopts the inductive methodology, where all the Prophetic traditions on this area were collected among the compilations of tradition and examined in accordance with the methodology of the muhaddithun (the scholars of ÍadÊth) i.e the chain of transmission and the texts of traditions were analysed. This is to know the status of the traditions as stated in terms of acceptance or rejection. The analytical methodology is also used by reviewing such traditions and elucidating their ambiguous meaning and presenting the opinions of Muslim scholars on the injunctions and rules derived from these traditions. The study concludes that the pledges of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) were not invariable; but were of various forms and stipulations as evident by the reports of sound and authentic traditions. The study also points out that such pledges can be practiced nowadays regardless of the absence of the Caliphate in the Muslim Ummah (Muslim community), particularly the pledge in relation to righteous deeds since it is conditional upon the recipient of the pledges to be a ruler or a caliph as in the case of the great pledge.
