Summary: | The main purpose of this research is to build an integrated curriculum for teaching
Arabic language to non-speakers of Arabic for diplomatic purposes, based on the
principles of building language curriculum for specific purposes. The researcher
followed the descriptive method in his study. To reach a comprehensive understanding
of diplomats’ tasks and language situations they face, the researcher studied
international relations and diplomats’ autobiographies, and reviewed books on
designing language programs for special-purposes. To develop the needs analysis, the
researcher composed a survey to gather data about the linguistic and culture needs of
workers in the diplomatic field. The survey covered two areas: the linguistic needs,
and the cultural needs. Replies from ٤١ respondents of diplomats, international
relations’ experts, foreign languages’ experts have been gathered. He also conducted
interviews with workers in the diplomatic field for the same purpose . Eventually, the
researcher has built a list of linguistic needs for workers in the diplomatic field. This
list was the basis for building the proposed curriculum. The researcher has also
analyzed three Arabic teaching textbooks to investigate the most common
communicative situations and grammatical rules used in elementary level, in order to
design a placement test for trainees to take before joining the program. |
