Summary: | This study examines Language Learning Strategies and their relation with language
errors of 300 learners of Arabic in IIUM. It also investigates the effects of
independent variables (gender, age, year of study and language background) on
learners’ strategies using SILL (Strategy Inventory Language Learning) version 7.0 by
Rebecca Oxford. 50 students (16.66%) of the total sample were chosen as the subsample to examine the connection between Language Learning Strategies and
Language Errors. These students answered the SILL questionnaire, wrote an essay and
recorded a short speech on chosen topics. These works were then analyzed statistically
and contextually in order to specify the causes of errors related to the Language
Learning Strategies employed by the sub- sample in their interlanguage. Results of
SILL analysis show that the level of Language Learning Strategies used by members
of the sample was medium average at all levels: Overall: (3.131), Six Categories of
Strategies: (3.354) – (2.954), and Individuals Strategies: (3.990) – (2.568). The
ANOVA indicates that there is no significant variation in overall strategies used by
the sample except in the usage of Memory Strategies by male and female: (F > M) as
well as year of study (1 > 2 < 3< 4). Among the significant results of the attempts to
link the strategies and error analysis is that the level of using Language Learning
Strategies is the main cause for these errors, which varied from grammatical errors
(63.39%), morphological errors (18.53%), spelling errors (9.22%), lexicographical
errors (5.63%) and phonetic errors (3.22%). This result supports the hypothesis that
the inculcation of awareness to Arabic language learners and guiding them to use
suitable and effective Language Learning Strategies will help them to reduce or to
prevent the possibilities of making errors. |
