| 520 | |a This study presents a systematic analysis of the transformation of the Albanian foreign policy. The Albanian foreign policy during the Communist era was guided by the ideology of Marxism-Leninism. In the post-Communist era, national interests replaced ideology as a guiding principle of the Albanian foreign policy. In addition, the determinants of the post-Communist Albanian foreign policy are a set of institutions and processes that are different from those of the Communist era. The study, in the light of relevant international theories, answers the following questions: What was the direction of Enver Hoxha’ foreign policy during the Communist regime? What was the direction of Albanian foreign policy after the fall of Communism in 1991? What are the determinants of Albania’s post-Communist Foreign Policy? In pursuit of its interests, Albania has adopted bilateral and multilateral approaches in relations to its neighbours, the European Union and the United States. The study concludes that in all bilateral and multilateral settings, Albania has focused on promoting good relations with the Balkan states, integration into European structures and European Union and securing close ties with the United States. Based on the discussion in the preceding chapters, the study suggests in chapter five some crucial recommendations. It concludes that Albania’s security and contribution to stability in the Balkan can be fulfilled by aggressively pursuing the policy of integration within the European structures and by further democratization of its institutions. | ||
