Description
Summary:This study analyzes the perceptions of Malay voters in the Hulu Selangor by-election held in March 2010. The purpose of this research is to identify the voting trends of the Malays of Hulu Selangor and determine the factors influencing voting patterns in this by-election. It identifies the voters' perceptions by examining their awareness towards party identification, the characteristics of the candidates and the issues that arose during the conduct of the campaign. The data were collected through questionnaires from 364 respondents in the Hulu Selangor constituency. The study finds that political party identification, the importance of candidate's positive character and the campaign issues positively influenced the voters in the by-election. There is a close correspondence between the actual results of the Hulu Selangor by-election and the survey's findings.
