Description
Summary:The study investigates in depth one the of Ummah's famous Mujtahids (Jurists), and one of its reputable Imams, that is Sheikh Mu!,ammed Jbn Abd Al- Wahhdb (mAmbuh). The researcher has meant to study the Sheikh's jurisprudence, opinionated judgments (Fatwa) so as to shade light on the method the Sheikh implemented in his tackling with critical religious issues whether jurisprudence (Fiqh) or the creed (Aqidah). The researcher limited his study to the earlier field, i.e. the Sheikh's efforts to reform the jurisprudence methods among Muslims, and his Dawah's methods that he adopted. Definitely, the researcher brought to light the condition of intellectual thinking and schools of thoughts throughout the Islamic World in general, and in Najd (Central Arabia) in particular. The researcher has been keen to make it clear that one of the most important reasons why the Sheikh's jurisprudence's legacy was in negligence was the concentration of the Sheikh's proponents on defending the dogmatic side (Aqidah) of his (Dawah), which was rejected by the Sheikh's opponents at that time. Consequently, the Sheikh's jurisprudence's legacy was not ferreted out until very recently in a conference held in the University oflmam Saud for this purpose. In addition, the study reveals the miserable condition in Najd's community - the locale of the Sheikh - and the rampant bigotry to Mazhab beyond which people did not use to submit even to Qur'an or Sunnah. The study reveals how much the Sheikh suffered from this narrow-minded environment, even from his close relatives, all which were controlled by ignorance of the Qur'an and Sunnah. However, these obstacles and obstructions were gradually overcome by the new reformation age whose foundations Sheikh Abd Al- Wahh<ib has come to erect. In its five chapters, the thesis studies religious reformation, its reasons, and its limitation; the religious reformer, his characteristics; what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in religious reformation; the misconceptions and the wrong perspectives with which religious reformers are encountered. The thesis, in addition, scrutinizes the intellectual principles in the jurisprudence environment of the Sheikh. Not only this, the thesis, also, examines the several stages though which Islamic Jurisprudence has passed, starting from the time of its birth up till the time of the Sheikh; it compares Sheikh Mu!iammed lbn Abd Al- Wahhiib with the other religious reformers, and how they procured their methods of reformations and renewing of Islamic knowledge from the same source. The study, in addition to all of these, clarifies and analyzes the jurisprudence principles, on which the Sheikh depended to come up with his own personal judgments and recommendations, his short publications, and books. The researcher has spot light on the reformative method, which the Sheikh followed in his writing, in his extracting evidences, his orations, and his debates. Of course, there are many examples that the researcher strikes to prove his findings. In general, this study has showed, and proved the great influence, and appeal, which Sheikh Abd Al- Wahhiib's has made on Islamic jurisprudence, particularly Hanbali school of thoughts as well as the returns that resulted from his efforts, one of which was the Saudi Government's espousing, supporting, and adopting of his intellectual methods in its three phases; not only this, but also, implementing the Sheikh's method in the different aspects of life: social, economic, political, and educational.
