The present study was aimed at discerning (1) whether the propositions of iman are amenable to reason, and (2) whether iman is based on and accompanied by knowledge. The study was further aimed at discerning the nature and source(s) of such knowledge as may accompany and provide a basis for iman. For this purpose, Qur'an was thoroughly examined and its ayat sampled on various themes relating to the research questions. This was followed by inductive synthesis of the Qur'anic perspectives on respective themes. Thus, the Qur'anic position on the amenability of iman to reason and its knowability was articulated, and iman compared for these features with “faith” of English language. It was found out that iman, unlike faith, is amenable to reason, and follows from knowledge. In fact, Qur'an requires all kinds of religious conviction to be based on knowledge. Accordingly, the Qur'anic presentation of iman assumes a knowledge-inclusive view of belief: iman may accompany and follow from knowledge, unlike faith which necessarily excludes knowledge. Next, the nature of such knowledge as provides a basis for iman was explored. In this regard, the possibility of a scientific basis for iman was examined from a Qur'anic point of view. Even though a number of people have tried to lend support from the findings of science to particular religious notions, it was found out that Qur'an does not propose a “scientific” justification for iman, and emphasizes instead the concept of iman bi-al-ghayb. The Qur'anic presentation of iman maintains that a revealed book is the kind of evidence that is sufficient as well necessary in justifying religious beliefs. The Book offers the kind of knowledge that accompanies īmān. The uncorrupted revealed word of God constitutes the epistemic basis of iman. | ||
