The main problem for the DC-shunt motor are, it has a very high starting current, and it has too long of a starting period for heavy-duty categories. This dissertation addresses DCmotor starting control using an armature current decay sensing technique (ACDST) for the fast-on application in a range of the low-to-maximum payload. This technique is implemented to control or activate the shorting mechanism for a series of armature resistors (electronic clutch). The key point to this concept is the proportional relationship between armature current and the developed torque on the DC motor. The shorting time for each individual resistor solely depends on the moment of minimum armature current decay. The investigation of the technique's effectiveness has been divided into five categories as follows: load dependability of operation, percent of starting-time reduction, smoothness in acceleration, range of load capability, and percent reduction of starting current. The system with a 200 Hp DC shunt motor has been modelled and simulated with MATLAB(SIMULINK) to obtain the current, speed, and torque parameters. The starter system has a good response for the range of 14 to 114 percent of the full-load. The proposed technique results a short start which approximately 80 percent of time reduction compare to the current-limiting DC-motor starter. The maximum current only results 1.5 times full-load which is 25 percent reduction compared to the existing starter system. The proposed starter system also eliminate the jerking effect that created by the sudden start. The significance of the proposed system using ACDST are, avoidance of on-line machine failure, reduced of power consumption, reduced the operation time, and increased the machine life-time. | ||
