520 |a This study examines and analyzes terrorism and counter-terrorism in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia beginning from the September 11 terrorist attacks incident in 2001 until 2008 from the constructivist perspective. It examines the nature, trends and roots of terrorism in Southeast Asia and the national and international responses of the ASEAN countries in order to combat terrorism. The data for this analysis come from primary and secondary sources, namely white paper reports of the ASEAN countries as well as declarations, policy statements, speeches and press releases from these nations regarding terrorism. These are supported by newspaper reports, books, magazines, and journals. This study found that the roots of terrorism in Southeast Asia are essentially homegrown with goals and objectives which are primarily domestic, thus necessitating a national counter-terrorism response. However, international counter-terrorism responses acting under the framework of ASEAN are also important in order to combat terrorism effectively in Southeast Asia.
