Summary:This study discusses the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia, and their contribution to the development process as those enterprises are considered as the backbone of the Malaysian economy. They assimilate 99.6% of the total economic enterprises in the country. To emphasize the importance and the status of SMEs, the Malaysian government has given much attention and encouragement to this sector, which has enabled them to grow and play important roles in the development process, with absolute confidence. The experience of SMEs in Malaysia is the subject of pride and appreciation due to their success. This study attempts to re-read and look at the existing development of SMEs and get the benefits from the success of their experience, which is established with the Malaysian self-effort of transferring and disseminating knowledge. They also contribute effectively to a range of economic and social goals for the society by increasing production, doubling the value added to growth domestic Product (GDP), promoting policies to combat unemployment and reduce poverty, and formatting inter-related relationships among different economic sectors. In addition, it is also encouraging the spirit of innovation and creativity, attracting investments, exploiting the available local resources, expanding markets, developing human resources and advanced technology, and assisting the development of production processes. The SMEs have a prominent role in the restricted Malaysian private sector, with commensuration of present chaos, and their adaptation of the development of modern life efficiently and effectively, by providing opportunities for businesses, through forming appropriate finance, and taking into account the specificities of the community and their own circumstances. It also seeks to meet the people's needs in Malaysia, and achieving their ambitions for better living standards.
