Some of the important applications of SVSS are traffic flow measurement, object detection and tracking, motion detection and security applications. However, it is still an open problem due to difficulties such as over/under image segmentations, the different views of a moving object, the occlusions of multiple moving objects, change of lighting conditions, shadows, reflections, etc. These difficulties often result in frequent object loss, high false alarm ratio, and other related problems. This research gives a brief history of rapid advancement and development of CCTV surveillance technologies; the need for smart video analytic solutions in the face of volume of unstructured video data, reduction of surveillance cost, real-time incident prevention or post-event forensic event analysis and event retrieval. This dissertation aims at developing a Smart Video Surveillance System (SVSS) in order to improve the traditional video surveillance system. The developed system (SVSS) is able to detect and track interested moving objects under the surveillance area such as motor bike, car, bus etc. It can also generate alarm to notify the users about the danger by activating motion detection where it is applicable in order to enhance security system. The thesis also demonstrates the features of SVSS, the architecture of SVSS and the key techniques to detect and track the interested objects. It also presents some of the key technical challenges to implement the system. Finally, a number of recommendations have been given that need to be addressed for the future growth of surveillance technologies and to meet the end-user‟s diversified and dynamic requirements.
