| Summary: | This research is a study of one of the books of Tafsir (Interpretations of the Qur'an), namely Tafsir Min Wahy Al- Qur'an, authored by the Shi'ah authority Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah. The research stems from the problem that this tafsir is a product of Shi'ite Imamiah Isnai Ashariyyah, to whom was ascribed a number of odd, hardly-swallowed, ill-supported opinions that have had their significant influence on the way with which the Shi'ite deal with and interpreted the Holy Qur'an, leading to a seriously distorted understanding of the holy book. Since the tafsir under study has become one of the most important contemporary tafsir references by the Shi'ite, it is imperative that this work be objectively analyzed so that we can better know its pros and cons, and to that extent the author has been objective and unbiased (as has been claimed). The researcher has adopted two approaches in conducting the study, the first is literature investigation in which he attempts to gather the sayings of credible scholars relevant to the study and the second is the analytical approach, where what has been gathered is approached with critical analyses and evaluation, followed by an attempt to extract useful inferences. The study can be described as being made of two main parts: the first gives a description of the Isnai Ashariyyah and the way they view the Qur'an and the different ways in which they approach and interpret the Qur'an; the second is about the studied tafsir (Tafsir Min Wahy Al- Qur'an) and its author. It gives an account of the author as well as related issues. The study concludes with some inferences and suggestions made by the author of the paper, on the top of which is the fact that the majority of Tafsirs by the Shi'ite have gone astray as a result of their methods towards interpreting the Qur'an which has been based on their flawed beliefs. On the other hand, although its author committed himself to the criteria of the school of tafsir to which he belongs, Tafsir Min Wahy Al- Qur'an is saved from many of the corruptions included elsewhere in many other books of tafsir of the same school. Consequently, its author deserves to be accredited with a level of moderation compared to his colleagues in the same school. However, his tafsir is not totally free from many affairs that contradict the view of the majority of Muslim scholars. |
