Description
Summary:This study examines the significant role played by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the intersecting crises that destabilized Mali in 2012-2013 by analyzing the reasons behind the establishment of MNLA, the goals and strategies of MNLA throughout the conflict, and also the reaction of the government of Mali towards Touareg uprising. This research is qualitative and uses textual analysis as method of data collection. This includes the primary sources of data collection such as official documents, treaties and accords, speeches and statements of government officials and leaders of the insurgents and the secondary sources of data collection such as books, articles, journals, documentaries, newspapers and websites among others to critically analyze the establishment of MNLA as well as its goals, and strategies. This study uses Amitai Etzioni's Theory of Organization as framework. Therefore, the framework of this study is composed of (1) the conceptual analysis of organization and (2) elements of organization with specific reference to MNLA. Based on the data analyzed, this study found, among others, that the aspiration of certain Touareg groups, particularly in the region of Kidal, to establish a Touareg State in northern Mali is not a recent phenomenon. This study also found that it was due to the failure of the government of Mali to develop its northern regions and to strengthen the concept of national unity throughout its entire territory that forced some Touareg groups to demand more administrative and military involvement in northern regions. Additionally, this study found that the preliminary Accord signed in February 2015 between the Malian authorities, the Coalition of Azawad Movements and other armed movements in northern Mali through the mediation of Algerian government and international organizations has been an essential step towards the establishment of lasting peace and reconciliation in Mali. Therefore, the implementation of the Accord must be based on mutual trust in order to restore a new national unity which will respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Mali and which will also reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity within the entire territory of Mali.
