520 |a Academic writing has always been one of the main problems for undergraduates in universities here in Malaysia. The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is no exception as teachers constantly highlight issues concerning writing abilities, especially with regard to students who are majoring in English (Bachelor of English Language and Literature) at IIUM. This research assessed the needs of English majors in an undergraduate writing course called Intensive Expository Writing at IIUM, and was prompted by the many complaints by lecturers regarding the writing ability of students on the course. A variety of tools were employed to obtain information: questionnaires for students, interviews with lecturers and document analysis. The results clearly show that the teachers' and students' views were quite conflicting. What was highlighted by the majority of teachers was the fact that knowledge of writing skills for these students is a determining factor in producing good papers in their respective courses. Many students clearly lack the knowledge of what good writing is but alarmingly they felt theyknew everything. A proposed design for the course Intensive Expository Writing together with materials was developed from the feedback and it is hoped that this could meet the needs of BENL students.
