Summary: | Religious factionalism with its destructive and divisive features can pull back any society from its social and intellectual progress. The case of Kerala Muslims is not different. Although much studies have been conducted discussing the educational development of Muslims in Kerala and many articles have been published on religious factionalism in the state, this study is considered the first which focuses on the negative impacts of religious factionalism on Islamic higher education institutions (IHEI) in Kerala. The primary purpose of this study is to explore the impact of religious factionalism on Islamic higher education policy of Kerala. It also aims at examining the negative effects of factionalism on students who pursue their study in IHEIs. This research adheres to qualitative method, and its data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with four Muslim educational experts in Kerala and focus group discussions with students from four major IHEIs under four different factions. Findings in this study include aspects related to intellectual freedom, diversity and creativity, and reproduction of factionalism by IHEIs. In conclusion, the study proposed some strategies to overcome the problem such as the idea of a university open to all factions, academic collaboration, and joint students' organizational activities. |
