Description
Summary:Computer models are frequently and widely used to assess and predict river water quality. Reliability of the computer model output largely depends on the input data and kinetic equations used in the model. Kinetic coefficients of the water quality parameters are extremely important for the calibration and validation of water quality models. Unfortunately, there is lack of information about these kinetic rates in tropical regions. This study was conducted to determine the reaeration rate of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and decay rates of three parameters, namely Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Carbonaceous Biochemical Oxygen Demand (CBOD) and Ammoniacal Nitrogen (AN), which are common parameters. Therefore, a laboratory flume was used to determine the reaeration rate equation for DO and decay rates for BOD, CBOD and AN. Clean tap water after deoxygenation was used in the reaeration rate experiments to determine the reaeration rate equation. River water representing different concentrations of pollutants were fed into the flume to determine the decay rates. The proposed DO reaeration rate is k_a=5.51 U^0.22/H^1.35 ; where U and H are the velocity and depth of water respectively in SI units. The equation is recommended if the velocity-depth ratio is between 0.9 and 7.6 m/s per m and Froude number varies from 0.11 to 0.55. The study revealed that the BOD, CBOD and AN decay rate can vary from 0.191 to 0.920, 0.107 to 0.875, and 0.117 to 1.481 per day, respectively. A new relationship between CBOD and BOD decay rates was developed as kCBOD=0.8642kBOD-0.0349; where kCBOD is CBOD decay rate and kBOD is BOD decay rate. The reaeration rate equation and decay rates were applied in Water quality Analysis and Simulation Program (WASP) computer model of Pusu River. It was found that the kinetic values derived from the flume could satisfactorily calibrate and validate the output of WASP model. As such, the results obtained from this study can be considered as a new contribution to knowledge, which will assist establishment of water quality computer models in tropical region with good confidence and great reliability.
