Description
Summary:The peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing protocol has evolved from depending on Internet connection provided by the traditional mobile cellular telecommunication networks, to free Internet connectivity through Wi-Fi technology. Yet it incurs other problems, such as high increase in mobile data traffic, which leads to higher charges on the public users. Current P2P protocols that are adapted on different mobile platforms, including Android, Symbian, iOS, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile OS, as well as tablets with different operating systems (OS), are analyzed at the beginning of this research. The analysis involves P2P protocols through various communication interfaces, which are the Wi-Fi network that requires Internet connectivity, as well as the ones that avoid Internet connection. This includes P2P protocols through the IEEE 802.15 Personal Area Network (PAN) standard, such as Bluetooth, UWB, RFID, and ZigBee. Recently, P2P reach was extended further in the Personal Area Network using Bluetooth. Currently, there are no studies that had been conducted on applying P2P over ZigBee. IEEE 802.15.4 Zigbee is a wireless sensor network (WSN) standard and smart phones are expected to be equipped with a ZigBee modem to provide control functionality for personal WSNs such as home networking, body area networks, …etc. Hence this leads to the idea of this dissertation, which introduces ZigBee technology to the mobile P2P environment, involving devices with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and higher OSs. Such an Android platform is the lowest version that can be found among most of the mobile devices in the market. An Android application named ZigBeeComm was designed and developed to integrate ZigBee dongles onto Android devices and enables P2P file sharing to be conducted over ZigBee radio. The application was developed using Eclipse SDK, and was stressed-test in various experimental condition. The recorded results were based on the time taken for complete file transfer between the Android devices, in seconds. Results show that the developed application provides P2P functionality between devices supporting Zigbee air interface. It is possible to send and receive files over ZigBee radio, yet the time taken for complete file transfer depends on the file size and distance between the devices, which varies from 85.71% up to 200% difference when benchmarked with Bluetooth 3.0.
