This study was aimed to demonstrated two important aspects in recruitment processes: adult coral community structure and spatio-temporal coral recruitment in Balok coastal waters and Bidong Island, Malaysia. A total of four sites in Bidong Island (Pasir Pengkalan 1 and 2, Pasir Tenggara and Pasir Cina) and three sites in Balok coastal waters (Station 1, 2 and 3) were surveyed using coral video transect method. Bidong Island has 'fair' coral condition with an average of 49% of total live coral cover. Out of fourteen families, twenty three genera were recorded during adult coral community structure survey with Pasir Tenggara demonstrated the highest H' and J' indexes (2.16 and 0.80). Meanwhile, Balok coastal waters have 'fair' coral condition with an average of 36% of total live coral cover. Thirty three genera from thirteen families were recorded during survey with Station 2 indicated the highest H' and J' indexes with 2.35 and 0.82 respectively. Coral recruitment study was conducted at three reef sites in Balok coastal waters and Bidong Island. Recruitment densities were determined by quantifying number of coral recruits settled on the terra-cotta tiles and artificial reef settlement plates. In Balok coastal waters, a total of 159 coral recruits were counted in this study with mean recruitment densities of 0.09 ± 0.03 n/m2 recruits per plate. Recruitment dominated by genus Platygyra followed by Porites and Fungia. Meanwhile, in Bidong Island, a total of 319 coral recruits were counted with mean recruitment densities of 0.19 ± 0.02 n/m2 recruits per plate. Recruitment dominated by genus Pocillopora followed by Stylopora and Seriatopora. Recruitment densities varied significantly between spatio-temporal scales, types of settlement plates and plate's orientation at two sampling areas. Minor spawning event was predicted in Balok coastal waters in September due to increasing number of Platygyra. Current speed might be influence recruitment success during settlement and recruitment period. Balok coastal waters recorded the highest current speed with 0.70 m/s compared to Bidong Island (0.06 m/s). Therefore, this research has provided important information in assessing reef resilience between open coastal waters and sheltered areas.
