520 |a This phenomenological qualitative study was conducted to understand the life of children after their traumatic experiences. It focuses on those who were abused physically and sexually by their close family members. The research was held at a government shelter home for victimized children in Kuala Lumpur. Studies conducted abroad have highlighted the effects of traumatic event on children, where the majority of these children were believed to possibly suffer from developmental delay. Certain techniques were said to have efficacious outcome in helping these cases. However, in Malaysia a study of this kind is still lacking and is not given much attention as the resources are limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the use of a group art therapy intervention with children who have experienced server traumatic events at their younger age. Four children (2 males and 2 females) aged between 9 to 12 years old participated in the study. They were referred to the shelter either due to severe physical abuse or sexual abuse including rape cases. All the participants completed all 4 sessions of therapy protocols. They met 2 hours weekly. Data were collected from 4 major sources mainly from the semi structured interviews; art work analysis, field notes and individual case profiles. The finding was concluded that the group therapy using art was found to be a good intervention to the participants. The activities managed to reveal various coping reactions that the children used after the traumatic event. They also shows many other aspects of their traumatic experiences such as their view on relationships after the incidents and also view of safe place specifically on their lives at the shelter home. The major implication of the study is the understanding of children's coping and pattern of reaction after trauma, which helps caregivers, counselors, and practitioners become more aware of the signs for those beyond normalization for further assistance. Testimonial to the efficacy of art therapy should help extend study findings on interventions related to traumatic children and broaden the training capacity of psychologist with this technique in Malaysia. However, the intervention is recommended best given before the period of 6 months and as many as 8 sessions to see more substantial results.
