Description
Summary:Electronic learning (e-Learning) has become a necessary way of teaching and learning in order to meet the demands of time and is now a requisite for the development of higher education in the modern era. However, despite its many benefits, e-Learning has led to more frequent violations of academic integrity, which is a critical aspect in higher education towards commitment, honesty, and responsibility. E-Learning has been widely adopted and has seen rapid growth in the Arab world. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is taking aggressively conscientious initiatives to embark on e-Learning, especially in order to geographically integrate its wide population spread and to provide a solution to meet the dire need for education among its female population. Consequently, the maintaining and promotion of academic Integrity is more challenging for the higher education institutions of Kingdome of Saudi Arabia (KSA) because of different cultural and religious environment from the rest of the world. The current study examined and assessed the local environment of the KSA by investigating factors influencing academic integrity in e-learning via three phases of analysis. In the phase 1, it seeks to identify and prioritize the major factors that contribute to academic integrity violation, as perceived by experts in e-Learning environment at King Khalid University (KKU). Subsequently, in the phase 2, the extents of each identified factors which lead to violation of academic integrity, as perceived by teachers and students in the same university were examined. Meanwhile, plausible recommendations were provided in the third phase to guide the university on how to maintain and promote academic integrity. The study adopted the mixed methods approach, based on exploratory sequential design. The population and sample for this study were taken from KKU. In this regard, the snowball sampling technique was used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. In the phase 1, the Delphi method was merged with AHP (Analytic Hierarchal Process) to collect and prioritize qualitative data from experts concerning the factors which influence the students to commit violations of academic integrity. As a result of phase 1, the study identified and prioritized the 10 most contributing factors in three dimensions, as perceived by the experts. On the other hand, to examine and validate the identified factors in e-Learning courses in the phase 2 of the study, the 5-point Likert scale survey was used to collect quantitative data from 324 respondents, including 253 students and 71 teachers. The Mann-Whitney statistical test was also conducted to see the difference of opinion between the two groups. The results verified that the identified factors significantly contribute towards academic integrity violation in e-Learning courses. Some recommendations which are based on the needs for higher education institutions were suggested to maintain and promote academic integrity with the help of online academic counsellors, teachers, and ethical contents integrated in the Learning Management System (LMS) of the institution. This research study will be beneficial for the progression of e-Learning in the KSA, and can help to enhance the overall learning environment and scenario of higher education. It is hoped that this study will be the base and point of reference in this topic for future researchers in the Arab world.
