Description
Summary:This study evaluates the dowry system in Bangladeshi society from the Qur'anic perspective. The primary objectives of this study are to explain the reality of the dowry system in the Qur'an, to investigate the dowry implementation in Bangladeshi society, to analyze the views of Bangladeshi scholars about the traditional and cultural use of dowry in Bangladesh in recent times and how it resembles or opposes the Qur'anic perspective of dowry. The researcher adopts the descriptive approach in collecting information about dowry from classical and modern Qur'anic commentaries, and from the general books on dowry written in Bangladesh and other countries. The study also uses the analytical method to analyze the system of dowry in Bangladeshi society and the comparative method to compare the views of scholars, traditional and modern. The study also utilizes the field study approach in collecting the views of scholars about the use of dowry in Bangladesh through personal interviews. The study reached certain conclusions as follows: Dowry is an integral part of marriage for its validity; it is to be paid wholly by man to the intended wife unless the wife happily gives or forgives part or whole of it. The conjugal relations are valid through payment of dowry to her. It is a fundamental right of wife established in the Qur'an. The Bangladeshi society adopts dowry in both Islamic and un-Islamic manner; the latter primarily is imported from Hindu cultures of India across generations. Bangladeshi scholars have voiced strong opposition to those practices and Hindu cultures as they are clearly against the injunctions of the Qur'an and Sunnah.
