They are recognized as experts on the understanding of the Qur'an; Sunna of Prophet Muhammad SAW; and the classical works of Muslim scholars. By doing so, kyai/ ulama as Islamic leaders have the capacity to influence their followers by issuing fatwa. This study attempts to analyze the voting behaviour of NU female members in 2008 Gresik election in electing the governor of East Java. It examines the NU female members' perspective on the involvement of kyai/ulamā' in political practices and kyai fatwa on politics. Those issues were investigated using qualitative method of analysis which relied on descriptive analytical approach and interpretation. Data was collected through interviews with the head of Gresik Muslimat Organization Branch and several heads of NU female members in five districts of Gresik. The data was also collected through the use of a questionnaire from 250 purposively sampled NU female members selected from five of the eighteen districts. The result of the study suggests strongly that the NU female members in 2008 Gresik election was not affected by fatwa issued by ulamÉ'/ kyai. It indicates NU female members' rational behaviour and personal maturity in determining their political choices.
