Summary:The purpose of this study is to design a prototype programme as supplementary material for a textbook named Al-'Arabiyyah Bayna Yadayk (Volume III – Unit I). Despite the fact that the book is attached with a CD-ROM, this study adds other audiovisual materials such as videos, images and links to some useful Internet sites. This study is conducted by using descriptive, developmental, and evaluation methodologies to suit the nature of the research that focuses more on the practical rather than the theoretical part. The specific supplementary materials proposed include multimedia that contains several elements of hyperlinks and links from the Internet, footage from video and audio materials and some exercises attached to the lessons selected from the book – Unit I. Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 is used to design the supplementary materials before they are developed using Adobe Presenter 7 and promulgated on the Internet with the assistance of a computer server called Apache. The study adopted the theory of Mayer (2001) and for the design and development, the model by Alessi and Trollip (2001) is implemented. The survey was distributed to 20 reviewers to evaluate the validity and reliability of the content and technical questionnaires, which reached the cronbach alpha validity and reliability of the content questionnaire at 0.944 and for the technical questionnaire at 0.957. The prototype developed was sent for evaluation to four experts in IIUM. The result were analysed using statistical treatment abstraction arithmetic means by using Microsoft Excel 2010. The results reveal that the developed programme is an appropriate computer-assisted programme in learning Arabic for non-native Arabic speakers.
