Description
Summary:The objective of this study is to ascertain the extent to which the textbook “Miftah al-Arabiyyah” agrees with the curriculum goals for teaching the Arabic language for beginners science students. It is the second textbook specialized to teach the basics of the Arabic language for science students at the Centre of Foundation Studies at the International Islamic University Malaysia. The University has developed and published this textbook in order to fulfill certain intellectual and learning goals, and to motivate those students to learn the Arabic language. This textbook needs to be studied to find out the extent to which it realized the desired goals. The researcher has adopted the descriptive analysis methodology and used two self-constructed instruments to answer the questions of this study. The first instrument was employed to analyze the language content of the textbook and the texts to know the extent to which the textbook conforms to the University's curriculum goals of teaching Arabic for science students. The second instrument was employed to investigate the extent to which the textbook has realized the components of the curriculum in accordance with the modern standards stipulated by scientists and educationists. The result revealed that the content of the textbook does not agree with the curriculum goals to teach Arabic to science students: the content's method of teaching the basics of the Arabic language does not reach the desired level, it does not develop the four language skill in a balanced manner, and does not seek to make the students realize the strong link between science and Islam. Also, the textbook does not realize all the components of the curriculum and when it does, it lacks the modern characteristics that should be actualized in any textbook: its goals are not clear, its content lacks sequence and coherence, and it does not observe the gradual presentation of vocabulary and texts. The textbook is in need to review the quality of the presented vocabulary and the content of its texts in order to modify it to suit the level of students and the goals of the curriculum.
