Description
Summary:This study highlights the nature of Al-'Addad (homonyms) and the views of Arabic lexicographers towards them and their special reference, either in supporting or opposing their derivation and application in Arabic language. This study expounds on Ibn al-'Anbari's roles in the collection, studies and publications on Al-'Addad. In addition, it highlights the Arabic linguists‟ opinions on circumstances that warrant their occurrence in Arabic language. Similarly, the study also probes the position of classical lexicographers towards al-'Addad words in the book of Ibn al-'Anbari. The researcher classified Al-'Addad words into “nouns”, “verbs” and “conjunctions” because they are sources of controversy amongst classical and contemporary Arabic linguists. The researcher adopted the tracking method on the functions of homonyms of Ibn al-'Anbari from three selected classical Arabic dictionaries, “Kitab-La'yn” of al-Khalil, “Al-Muhkam”of bin Sayyiduh and “Lisanu Al-'Arab” of bin Mansur. This is to vindicate their prevalent usage in Arabic language and to know to what extent Arabic lexicographers have agreed on Ibn al-'Anbari's opinion on al-Addad. The findings of this study are based on the compilation of scholars‟ opinions on al- Addad, whereby the book of al-Addad of bin al-'Anbari contains 357 words in which the lexical scholars have agreed with bin al-'Anbari on 82 words while they disagreed with him on 71 words. The remaining 204 words were either agreed or disagreed upon by scholars. Those opinions were of those who agreed or disagreed with Ibn al-'Anbari's ideas on the derivation and application of al-Addad which prescribe as the clue to the solution for all stakeholders in Arabic Linguistics, either scholars or academics. Altogether, the positive effect is to be implemented in academic curriculum and purposes for teaching according to vital recommendations are provided.
