Summary: | This dissertation studies the passive drag reduction of 3D bluff bodies like trucks and buses. Preliminary studies were conducted with various add-on devices to find which one gives optimistic drag reduction. From the preliminary study, two add-on devices were selected to be studied in depth: backward facing step and rear flap. The geometry of the flaps were modeled and parametric studies were done on both designs. For backward facing step, different sizes and configurations were used; and for flaps different geometries, sizes and mounting angles were studied. Numerical studies were done using CFD software Star CCM+. It was found that the best backward facing step configuration gives 9.9% of drag reduction and the best configuration of flap gives 11.1% drag reduction. |
