This research sets out to carry out the study on two types of professional writing, namely, academic articles and news articles. The purposes of this study are to acknowledge and identify the use of these devices, to find out if there are any differences in the occurrence of SIAs in the two types of professional texts as well as to comprehend the main characteristics of each type of SIA used. The investigation was conducted based on the contribution by Goutsos (1997), which was later developed by Govindasamy (2007) as well as Mohamad Fairuz (2010). As such, data analysis would be based on the functional model as adopted from Govindasamy (2007) and Mohamad Fairuz (2010). In this framework, there are 12 categories of Sentence-Initial Adjuncts (SIAs), namely, Familiar information, New information, Topic continuity, Topic shift, Time expression, Place expression, Closure, Conditionals, Author's voice, Encapsulation, Reference to author and Hedging. The findings suggest that professional writers utilise these devices regularly in their written texts to signal to the readers the topic being discussed. The findings also reveal that academic writers tend to use less SIAs to begin sentences, especially in articles regarding science and technology. Meanwhile, other professional writers use SIAs consistently regardless of the specific field. Based on this study, the researcher believes that the effectiveness in the teaching of writing can be achieved by using appropriate texts with rich exposure to SIAs.
