Therefore, this study is conducted to assess the spoken English needs in the financial services industry. This study investigates the most encountered purpose and functions of using spoken English in the financial services industry. In addition, this study also investigates the most common contexts or situations which require employees to use spoken English in the financial services industries. Lastly, this study attempts to find out the criteria that are used in assessing spoken English of potential employees. A mix method was employed in analysing the needs of spoken English in the financial services industry. The data were collected using both questionnaires and interviews. Subsequently, the data obtained from the questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively and the data from the interview were reported descriptively. The findings of the study reported that almost all of the functions that require good spoken English skills listed are either almost always or frequently encountered in the financial services industry. Moreover, the study also reported the three most encountered situations where employees need to converse well in English are in formal discussions, in meetings and during conferences. The findings of the study also reveal the criteria emphasized in assessing spoken English in the recruitment process are correct use of grammar and appropriate use of vocabulary. High emphases are also given to the language skills of listening and speaking. It is hoped that the findings will help the EOP course developer to improve or design a better EOP course for financial institutions considering the spoken English needs of the employees. It is also hoped that the findings will help the potential employees to be more prepared and equip themselves with the skills needed before joining the workforce.
