Description
Summary:The main purpose of this study was to investigate the role of the Internet in the teaching Arabic as a foreign language to beginners, for the development of their reading skills at the Center of Language and Pre-University Academic Development (CELPAD), International Islamic University Malaysia. The study employed a descriptive method. In the data collection process, two closed questionnaires were distributed to both students and teachers. The study targeted at students of Arabic language for beginners in all disciplines in CELPAD. It included a random sample of 181 male and female students, as well as a random sample of 15 male and female teachers, which amounted to a total of 196 respondents. In addition, the information obtained from the participants were analyzed using the statistical package known as (SPSS). The statistical treatment was carried out using repeated distribution and percentage process. One of the main findings of the study is that both students and teachers emphasized that the Internet increased students' knowledge in all aspects. The results also confirmed that teachers encouraged students to use the Internet in a constant manner, when reading for learning and or developing their knowledge. The results also showed that video conferencing was useful for students as it enhances their knowledge. Moreover, online newsgroups and journals played an effective role in the development of the level of reading among students. For example, the results revealed that most of the teachers pointed out that e-books, dictionaries, and online encyclopedias had a significant impact on the development of reading skills among students. The statistical analyses also revealed that teachers and students agreed that online learning websites played an effective role in the development of the reading skills of the students. Likewise, they agreed that online learning websites were also effective in increasing the scope of students' culture, and in enhancing their language skills. Besides, these learning websites encouraged students to learn Arabic and all its arts with passion and eagerness. Eventually, the study concluded with some recommendations and proposals vis-à-vis the role of the Internet in teaching Arabic as a second language.
