Description
Summary:This study investigates the nature of Turkish foreign policy orientation under the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) during the period from 2002 to 2011. It traces the change in this orientation from the establishment of the Turkish republic in 1923 until 2011 in order to figure out the factors that have been behind that change. The study is based on the researcher's claim that the change in Turkish foreign policy orientation during the AKP era has resulted from a combination of systemic developments, alteration of the political elite, and the increase in state power. Hence, it examines the international and regional context in which AKP's foreign policy has been conducted, the general foreign policy preferences of the AKP elite, and the extent of authority, and the resources available at the hands, of these elite on foreign policy making. The method used in this study includes contextual analysis and interpretation of policies and actions taken by the Turkish state and its officials, in addition to articles, statements, and speeches delivered by the latter. In the context of analysis, the study refers also to statistics provided by specialized agencies and institutions.
