520 | |a This present study examined the relationship between perceived life stress, problem-solving ability and suicidal ideation among university students in Klang Valley. Particularly, this study looks at the correlation between perceived life stress and suicidal ideation as well as the moderating effects of problem-solving ability on the level of suicidal ideation. It was hypothesized that (1) There will be a positive relationship between perceived life stress and suicidal ideation among university students, and (2) Problem-solving ability will moderate the relationship between perceived life stress and suicidal ideation where better problem-solving ability would decrease the relationship between perceived life stress and suicidal ideation among university students. Convenient sampling was utilized and 134 university students age ranged between 21 and 29 years old were recruited as participants. The sample consisted of 77 females and 57 males from various races (e.g. Malay, Chinese, Indian). They were asked to complete a booklet of questionnaire containing measures such as Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised: Short Form (SPSI-R:S) and Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS). Correlation analysis was conducted and the result demonstrated that perceived life stress indeed correlated with suicidal ideation. Students who experienced high perceived life stress were more likely to have higher suicidal ideation. To test the moderation effect, hierarchical regression analysis was executed and the result showed that problem-solving ability neither increased nor decreased the relationship between perceived life stress and suicidal ideation among university students. Hence, there is no evidence found to support the role of problem-solving ability as a moderator in the relationship between perceived life stress and suicidal ideation. The findings of this study will be beneficial for practitioners (e.g. psychologists, counsellors) to improve suicide prevention and intervention programs in Malaysia. The implications and limitations of the study were discussed as well. | ||
