Concurrently, globalization, technology, the new economy, demographic shifts, political change and their consequent transformations have induced the requisite for convalescence. Incumbent research has provided substantial evidence that both economic and social well-being of nations are dependent on the competence of its workforce. This research unravels the social aspects that shape and influence occupational preference among youth in rural islands of Maldives. The study is conducted in V.Fulidhoo which is a small rural island in the Vaavu atoll of the Maldives. This island is located in a tourism zone with a few resorts surrounding the island. However, many youth seem to be unemployed or hesitant to seek employment which is the case throughout the Maldives. The research delves into the depths of the thoughts on employment that parents, teachers, industrial experts and youth have on occupational preference and employment. It unravels and presents many aspects of social problems that, if addressed timely, may potentially resolve some of the inertia towards actively seeking employment. Data was collected from female and male youth categorised into four groups based on their age via focus group interviews. In-depth interviews were also used to collect data from parents, teachers and industry experts on the island. The study highlights crucial themes that emerged out of the analysis of the research and these are thoroughly discussed within the findings of the study. The outbound social mobility and a fluid sense of rural - urban identity were among the key aspects that shape occupational preference of the youth. The narrow occupational horizon of the rural youth and their circumstance shuns aspirations and hence limits the occupational preference. Loose employment regulations were also evident from the narrations of how employers treat rural employees. All these aspects are thoroughly examined and some recommendations are discussed in the final chapter for the stakeholders to utilize the findings of this exploratory research. The youth of any nation is the thread that leads to the highflying kite of tomorrow. Thus, it is greatly hoped that this research has contributed towards understanding rural youth and the aspects related to occupational preference among the rural youth, and help resolve issues facing the rural youth in the context of employment. | ||
