Description
Summary:The main purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of alumni and their parents on the effectiveness of Islamic private secondary schools in Pattani Province in Thailand. The study was designed based on the theoretical framework of Lizotte (1991) of effective school correlates model. This study seeks to answer four main inquiries namely :(1) What are parents‟ perceptions towards the effectiveness of Islamic private secondary schools in Pattani province, Thailand? (2) Are there any significant differences between genders (male, female) in the parents‟ perception on the effectiveness of Islamic private secondary schools? (3) Are there any significant differences between the school categories (A, B, C) in Pattani province Thailand, based on the practices of effective schools? (4) To what extent do Islamic school alumni perceive the effectiveness of Islamic private secondary schools? This study uses two methods, quantitative and qualitative to reach its objectives. Stratified random sampling has been applied to select 10 Islamic private secondary schools while purposive sampling was used to select the sample size of 150 parents from the whole population. For the interview session, a purposive sampling procedure was used to select seven school alumni to be interviewed. Since the study uses a framework of effective school correlates, the findings showed that parents perceived all seven factors of effective school correlates namely: School Climate, School Mission, Instructional Leadership, Parent Involvement, School Monitoring, School Safety and High School Expectation are effectively practiced in Islamic private secondary schools in Pattani Province, Thailand. Moreover, all findings in the interview of school alumni regarding their perceptions were in line with the findings from the perceptions of the parents. Furthermore, the findings revealed that there were no statistically significant differences in perception between the genders of the parents (male and female) on the effectiveness of Islamic private secondary schools. Finally, results showed that, there were no statistical differences between the three Islamic school categories (A, B, C) based on the practices of effective schools. In general, this study provided future insight which can benefit Islamic private secondary schools, especially their policy makers. This study is considered as the first study carried out in the field of school effectiveness in Pattani Province. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that similar studies should be conducted in different Provinces in Southern Thailand.
