Description
Summary:This study analyses the usage of Arabic pronouns by the students of the College of Islamic Studies in the Prince Songkla University - Pattani and identifies the errors they make and the sources of these errors. To achieve this purpose, forty one students from various classes were selected. They were asked to write an assay entitled" My Friends In This University " and to translate a passage from the Thai to the Arabic language. These assignments were then analyzed to find out the proper and improper usage of the pronouns. The study adopts the methodology of Error Analysis. The steps in this methodology were closely followed. The study found that the students face difficulties in learning Arabic pronouns that contribute to their failure in correct application of the language. Students' errors are classified into five primary categories as follows: 1) Errors of choice of pronoun 2) Errors in application of pronoun and its reference 3) Errors of omission 4) Errors of addition 5) Errors of repetition The study also found that the errors are attributed to many sources, such as negative transfer from the Thai and the Malay languages to Arabic, hyper correction, lack of attention which results from quick writing, doubtful allocation of the references' meanings and interference of fixing the reference between the elements of the sentence. Other sources of errors are incomplete knowledge of the signs of the pronouns, incomplete knowledge of the object of using the pronouns in language, the effects of direct translation from the Thai and the Malay languages to Arabic and the poor performance of the students to explain the correct meaning. The findings of the study should help the authorities in redesigning study materials for the teaching of Arabic pronouns in the university.
