Description
Summary:This study aims to propose a checklist of items in order to evaluate the textbook of Arabic Language for Academic Purposes (AAP) among learners at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) by analyzing the views of students and teachers toward their textbook, as well as to disclosure to what extent the used textbook considering the standard of AAP's textbook. The researcher uses the analytical evaluation method, where the researcher analyzes the number of checklist items from articles, books and research that are used in language for specific purposes (LSP) textbook evaluation. Based on the analysis, the researcher builds her own checklist to evaluate the textbook of Arabic Language for Academic Purposes (AAP) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The researcher has distributed the questionnaires to 96 learners and run the interview session with the two instructors of AAP's course in the first semester of 2014/2015 to evaluate the textbook. The most important findings indicate that, there is no checklist that is perfect and appropriate to evaluate all textbooks. Hence, the researcher suggests a checklist consisting of 48 questions under four aspects: learners' need, skills and strategies, authenticity and appearance and design. It is observed as well, that the book receives positive views from the learners in terms of the three aspects, except the appearance and design's aspect. On the other hand, from the teachers' views, they suggest to improve these two aspects; authenticity and the appearance and design. Overall, The data shows that the total mark for the book given by the respondents is 70.59%, which is at an appropriate level. This shows that the textbook is still corresponding with the standard of AAP's textbook.
